Maintenance basics every rider should know

Most bicycle problems are not repairs. They are maintenance that was skipped. A chain that snaps was worn for months; a brake that fades had thin pads for weeks. The useful skill is not fixing failures but noticing the slow drift toward them, and that takes minutes rather than mechanical talent.

This is a realistic maintenance routine for a bike ridden year-round in German conditions, plus a clear line between the jobs worth learning and the ones worth paying for.

The two-minute pre-ride check

Three things, every time you take the bike out. Mechanics summarise it as air, brakes, chain.

  • Air: squeeze both tires. If they give easily, pump them. Low pressure causes more punctures and more sluggish riding than any other single factor.
  • Brakes: pull both levers. They should firm up well before touching the bar and hold without creeping.
  • Chain: look at it. Clean and lightly oiled is right; dry and grey, or black and gritty, both mean it needs attention.

Add a quick wheel check if the bike has quick-release skewers or thru-axles: lift each end a few centimetres and let it drop, then check nothing rattles. This catches loose axles before they become a story.

The monthly half-hour

Once a month, or after any week of heavy rain, spend thirty minutes going deeper.

  1. Clean the drivetrain. Degrease and wipe the chain, then re-lubricate one drop per roller and wipe off the excess. Excess lube collects grit and does more harm than too little.
  2. Check brake pads. On rim brakes look for the wear grooves; on discs check that pad material remains above roughly a millimetre. Listen for a metallic scrape, which means you are already late.
  3. Check bolt torque at the stem, handlebar clamp, seatpost, rack and mudguard mounts. Use a torque wrench where a number is printed, especially on carbon parts.
  4. Spin the wheels. Watch for wobble at the brake pads and feel for grinding in the hubs.
  5. Test the lights. Both of them, in the dark, not in a lit room.
  6. Inspect tire sidewalls for cuts and embedded glass. Digging out a shard now prevents a puncture later.

Chain wear is the number that saves you money

A chain stretches as it wears, and a worn chain grinds the cassette and chainrings into a matching worn shape. Replace the chain in time and you buy one cheap part. Leave it and you buy three expensive ones.

A chain wear indicator tool costs very little and takes ten seconds to use. Check it monthly on a bike ridden regularly. Assisted bikes wear chains faster because of motor torque, so pedelec riders should check more often — see our pedelec commuting post for the other cost differences.

A chain is a consumable. A cassette should not be.

There is no virtue in doing everything yourself. The judgement worth developing is knowing which category a problem falls into before you take something apart on a Sunday evening.

A minimal toolkit

For home: a floor pump with a gauge, a set of hex keys, a torque wrench covering roughly 2–15 Nm, a chain wear indicator, a chain tool, tire levers, degreaser and chain lube, and a rag supply. For the bike: a mini pump or CO2, one spare tube, a patch kit, a multitool with a chain breaker, and a tire lever. That covers the overwhelming majority of roadside problems.

Seasonal habits for German conditions

Wet autumn and salted winter roads are hard on bikes, and the response is frequency rather than complexity. Rinse with low-pressure water after salty rides — never a pressure washer, which forces water past bearing seals. Re-lubricate more often and use a wet-weather lube. Check pads monthly instead of seasonally, because grit accelerates wear sharply. Watch mudguard stays and rack bolts for corrosion, since those are the fittings that loosen unnoticed. When to book a service

Book a workshop visit if you notice any of the following: braking that has lost power despite good pads, a creak that changes with pedalling load, play in the headset or bottom bracket, gear shifting that will not index cleanly after cable adjustment, or a wheel that has developed a visible wobble. Also book one after the first few hundred kilometres on a new bike, when cables settle and spokes bed in.
